For brake pads - taking the glaze off. 

Seeing as I'll be heading to Toolstation for some thread lock, what kind of file should I be looking at? My current ones are nabbed from old toolboxes, have no handle and are past their best.

I think you're overthinking this dottigirl. Any fairly fine to medium file would do the job perfectly.

Pretty much anything.

I used 250 grit sandpaper. Don't use anything super fine like polishing sticks or wet and dry though!

Just use emery boards (as used for fingernails).
